Healthcare networks are traditionally evaluated by provider counts, geographic coverage, and contractual arrangements. While these factors remain important, they tell only part of the story.

A pediatric provider located ten minutes away delivers limited value if appointment availability is measured in weeks rather than days. Access, not merely proximity, determines whether a network effectively serves patients and families.

Employers should consider how quickly employees can obtain appointments, access behavioral health services, receive developmental evaluations, and secure appropriate follow-up care. A healthcare network should be judged not merely by how many providers participate, but by how effectively patients can use it.
