Newborn Insurance Notice

As a new parent, there’s a lot on your mind right now, but there are steps you need to take to ensure your newborn is covered under your health plan. Adding your child to your insurance plan within 30 days ensures that your child is covered and prevents you from becoming responsible for any outstanding balances.

1._Complete Birth Registration

  • At the hospital, you should have completed the birth registration form to receive your baby's birth certificate and Social Security card.

2._Call Your Insurance Company

  • If your insurance is through your employer, notify both your insurance company and your employer to add your newborn to your policy.
  • Most health plans offer a special enrollment period, typically:
  • 30 days for employer-plans
  • 60 days for Marketplace plans

3._Insurance Requirements

  • Often the insurance company needs the baby’s birth certificate and Social Security number (if applicable).
  • The specific paperwork may vary by plan.

4._Confirm Coverage

  • It's important to confirm your newborn has been added to your plan.
  • Delays can result in denied claims.
  • If you qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, your baby is automatically enrolled in coverage for at least one year.

5._Select a Primary Care Provider

  • Make sure the Pediatric Health Care Alliance participates with your insurance plan.
  • Verify enrollment, so you can select one of our pediatricians.
