As we continue to monitor the cases of measles outbreaks in our area and nationwide, we want to make you aware of the recommendations for when early vaccination against measles is warranted.
Infants 6 to 11 months of age who live in an area of outbreak, are travelling to an area of outbreak, or are travelling internationally should receive the MMR vaccine, preferably at least 2 weeks prior to travel. This dose would not count for the recommended 2 dose series of MMR.
Infants less than 6 months of age cannot receive the measles vaccine. Children 12 months and older who have received 2 doses of the MMR vaccine after 12 months of age and at least 28 days apart do not need additional doses during an outbreak.
If you are unsure of your child’s MMR vaccine status or you want to discuss the best time for your child to receive the vaccine, please contact our office for guidance.
