Emergency departments play an indispensable role within the healthcare system. They provide lifesaving treatment, advanced diagnostics, and immediate access to care during serious medical events. Their value is unquestioned. The challenge facing employers and health plans is not whether emergency departments should be used, but whether they are being used for the most appropriate conditions.

Many pediatric healthcare episodes begin when parents need guidance quickly and perceive limited alternatives. A fever after work, a respiratory infection on a weekend, or a minor injury during a school holiday can prompt families to choose the most accessible source of care available. When timely primary care access is unavailable, higher-cost healthcare settings may become the default option, regardless of whether they represent the most efficient site of care.

No employer should expect pediatric primary care to solve healthcare inflation. However, creating accessible and coordinated entry points into the healthcare system may help support more efficient utilization patterns over time. Healthcare affordability often improves not through dramatic interventions, but through thousands of individual decisions that guide patients toward the right level of care at the right moment.
