Healthcare utilization patterns are heavily influenced by timing. Children rarely become ill according to business schedules, and parents often make healthcare decisions during evenings, weekends, holidays, and other times when many traditional physician offices are closed.

From an employer perspective, after-hours pediatric access should be viewed as part of network design rather than a convenience enhancement. Providing families with timely access during nontraditional hours creates alternatives to higher-cost settings while preserving continuity within established care relationships.

After-hours access can improve patient experience, support more appropriate site-of-service utilization, and reduce stress for working families. Healthcare does not stop at five o'clock, and increasingly, meaningful access should not either.
