Ensuring a Safe and Healthy Summer for Your Family

Summer is almost here, and with it comes longer days, exciting adventures, and time to relax and recharge. To help your family have a safe and healthy summer, we at the Pediatric Health Care Alliance have compiled some helpful tips:

Summer Safety Sunshine:
  • Sun Smarts: Protect your children's delicate skin from the sun's harmful rays. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher generously and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Consider sun-protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats for added defense.
  • Hydration Heroes: Summer heat can lead to dehydration quickly. Encourage your children to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if they don't feel thirsty.
  • Poolside Precautions: Whether at the pool, beach, or lake, adult supervision is crucial. Teach your children to swim and encourage the use of life jackets.
Healthy Eating for Growing Champions:
  • Pack Smart Snacks: Stock up on healthy, portable snacks like fruits, vegetables, whole-grain crackers, and yogurt to keep your little ones fueled for summer adventures.
  • Beat the Heat with Cool Choices: Frozen fruits, popsicles made with natural ingredients, and smoothies are refreshing and hydrating treats. Limit sugary drinks and processed snacks.
  • Involve Your Kids: Get your children involved in meal prep! Let them help wash fruits and vegetables, choose healthy recipes, or pack their lunchboxes.
Keeping Kids Active All Summer Long:
  • Beat the Boredom: Plan outdoor activities like bike rides, nature walks, or backyard games. Encourage participation in sports camps, swimming lessons, or other active pursuits.
  • Get Creative Indoors: Rainy days don't have to be boring! Plan indoor activities like dance parties, scavenger hunts, or arts and crafts projects.
  • Lead by Example: Make physical activity a family affair! Take walks together, explore parks, or try a new sport as a family.
Travel Tips for Tots (and Big Kids Too!):
  • Plan Ahead: Pack a first-aid kit, medications, and any necessary paperwork for your child. Pack familiar toys and activities to keep them entertained during travel time.
  • Stay Hydrated: Encourage frequent water breaks, especially during car rides or plane journeys.
  • Be Patient: Travel can disrupt routines. Stay calm and flexible, and plan plenty of breaks or playtime for restless little ones.

We hope these tips help your family have a safe, healthy, and fun-filled summer!
